Maybe I'm overreacting, but it makes me feel like a lot of people on r/simpleliving desire to escape from work rather than to put in effort to reach a state where they're fulfilled from meaningful work.
Meaningful and fulfilling careers are meant to be challenging. They're meant to include dull drudgery. Personally speaking, I see no purpose in working a job that doesn't stretch my cognitive abilities to its limits. To others they may exercise different skills; the important part is that we gain great satisfaction when we accomplish difficult tasks that require a mixture of hard and soft skills.
The notion of retiring early and never working again in my life, or being content with where I am at is incongruous with my sense of living a good life.
I'd personally like to work hard until the day I die. I am fortunately in CS, a field that allows for that, so as long as I maintain physical and cognitive health.
I also competed in competitive collegiate card gaming. It's the kind of field where if you're not bleeding your brains out practicing, you don't deserve to be in the big stage. It gives me joy to engage in a competitive mental sport.
I don't think that's incongruous with simple living. Yet I get the notion that many here won't agree.
