I’ll start with my house is really old and nothing is a simple update so need a little advice here. The current front porch supports are wrought iron and so is the railing around it. I would like to replace the 3 supports with 4 x 4 posts and then put some spacers around it and more wood to make some columns that are 5.75” on each side. I have a plan for anchoring then to the porch, but I can’t figure out how to mount them to the roof. Normally I would assume there would be a header of some sort but the wrought iron supports are connected to a 2 x 4. On top of all of this, the “ceiling” of the porch is sloped. It looks like someone just used plywood and bent it to fit with the roof line. Anyone have any advice on how to get some posts secured to my roof? Here are some pictures. http://bit.ly/2F0R7kX via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2I8JtXO
