I like that this thread has been having a lot of discussions on sustainability, fast fashion, and prices recently. I’ve liked reading through them, and I want to contribute my thoughts as someone in college and with a lower budget.

1) Ethics isn’t productive conversation.

I say this because people with less money may use it as a reason not to shop ethical, and people with more money still buy from designer brands that aren’t ethical. I don’t think this is really the best thread to wade over these things. Most people know what fast fashion is and whether they care.

2) Chinese sites are overrated

Sites like Shein and Romwe. I don’t think it makes sense to order regularly from a site that I‘d struggle to return things to, even if it costs less. If there’s no return in my country, 9/10 times won’t buy there. The rare times I have, it was something unique as in I will never find this print/item anywhere else.

3) Thrift is cool, not the holy grail

It’s a sustainable option, I will agree. But everything in a thrift store isn’t free of stains or smells. I think over-layers like a jacket, jeans, a sweater — are best for thrifting. I’ll crop pants too long. Consignment stores are cool for unique items, but there’s that issue of price for lower budgets.

4) Sustainable brands are pricey

It’s the truth. I can’t afford a $25 tee. I’d rather someone practice sustainable habits even if they can’t afford ethical brands. I have royal blue v necks from years ago that still look good from target, and I machine wash often. But I haven’t needed new ones since.

5) Shop need, then quality, then price

I think quality of items matters most. While F21 does have okay quality sometimes, at least I’m guaranteed a base quality at BR. Just saying. I’ve been on a low budget for years and I’m here to say you can shop at better stores if you’re strategic and identify a need.

So those are my takes on a lot of frequent conversations. Sorry if it’s a lot. But maybe it’s something different than you’ve heard before. :)
