Hello-I am about to start rebuilding one of my three fences in the back yard. This will be done without any neighbor input as the other side of the fence is a sidewalk. My ultimate goal is to build a cedar fence using existing treated fence posts (they are in good condition still) that will last for a really long time and will keep my dogs from seeing anyone that walks by on the sidewalk. My town has a 6' height restriction and my HOA does not permit board-on-board, so here are my plans so far:For the fence rails, I will be using one treated 2X8 or 2X10 on the bottom, so that it can go to the ground and keep dog noses from sticking under the fence. For the mid and upper rails, I will be using treated 2x4s.Pickets will be 6" cedar plank with no dog-ear.Fence cap will be pressure treated 2x6. This will be complemented with a horizontal 4" cedar runner below it, as well as one along the bottom of the pickets.Construction plan is as follows -Place 2x8 (or 2x10) level along the ground and the other rails at the mid and top of the fence posts. These will all be flush with the outside of the post as I plan on running the pickets the full length of the fence and hiding the posts behind the cedar. I plan on running the 2X6 cap board along the full length of the fence as well, covering the top of the posts, too. This will complete the first phase of the fence and prepare it for phase 2.Phase two will begin once the pickets have shrunk and gapped. I will then be ripping cedar boards down to about 2" and adding them to the inside of the fence as battens. I will also be sealing the fence at this time. That should complete the fence.I am curious what people think of this design, and if they have any suggestions on what I can do to make it any better. Thanks all! via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2ItPLQY
