A (belated) update on my 3rd week of no-store bought produce.

  • Spouse and I prepared dinner for a small homeless shelter this week, so we bought vegetables (5lbs carrots) and fruit (2 cantaloupes) so that we'd have enough food for ~15 people.
  • The fruit part of the challenge has hit a rough spot. I ran out of dried/frozen fruit from last season, and it's just too early in the season for fruit in zone 4, I broke down and bought some bananas and grapefruit yesterday. There's 7 days left in the school year (a cranky time), and spouse was getting especially cranky about not having fruit with his lunches at work.
  • We ran out of alliums this week, although we have been harvesting some garlic chives from the garden. To be honest, I thought I was going to notice their absence more, but it's been a surprisingly easy transition.
  • Dinners have been a success. We've primarily been eating lettuce, dandelion, and hostas (cooked adult leaves). We also have about a quart of sauerkraut we're still finishing up. *Took spouse out to dinner twice this week - once as a belated anniversary present (before a concert I had bought us tickets for), and the other time because we had had a busy day and neither of us felt like cooking. *Our grocery total is probably the lowest it's ever been. This challenge has been the motivation to actually eat all the food that's available right outside my back door. Major win.

Current Monthly Grocery Total: $142.63
