I had the suspicion I was being underpaid in my industry, so I applied for a similar job with another company. I ended up getting an offer for a nearly 50% raise. I don’t want to take the job - I just wanted to see what I’m worth.

I took this offer to my direct supervisor who is onboard with a raise to match the offer, but he told me that his manager will want to meet with me to discuss (understandable). After he spoke with his manager about my request he told me to be prepared to answer her question: “How do I know you won’t do the same thing next year? And the next year?”

Any advice on how to approach this question? Ultimately my answer revolves around being paid appropriately for my market value, not holding my current employer hostage, but any thoughts would help me at this point.
