I don't fully understand how it's legal (company is in Utah) but my company only provides half pay for overtime, because they want to discourage overtime in favor of a good work life balance. However, because so many people on my team are taking time off, we need the coverage. My manager said when he was my age he would take all the OT he could get because it was 1.5x pay and he thinks it's very unfair to ask me to put in this kinda time without better compensation.

He mentioned he could give me giftcards (I am organizing a totally unrelated event/competition within the company that has Amazon gift card incentives so he could give it to me through that I assume), or move it up to 1.5x pay as a bonus. Even though I'd prefer cash to giftcards, I think it would be taxed higher (salary is $40k). I could also request extra PTO in proportion to the extra time worked, but I still have my full 20 vacation days I haven't used yet this year so I'm not sure I need it.

Just wondering 1) is this bogus and 2) what's the best way to ask for compensation?
