I am 39. My wife has a job with a pension - spare me the pension doom and gloom talk; I get it - and I have had trouble getting a real career going (I got a useless degree and then the family business failed, then I went back to school). Between housing, raising kids, etc. we really have nothing significant saved. We don't have debt other than mortgage, though.
Where should we even start? We had a little portfolio with an advisor for something like ten years and it kept going up and down, up and down, up and down with really no growth at all. I started to think that the whole stock market was overblown bullshit until I did some research - and no, it seems like 7% is what one can expect.
My wife's job is great in terms of her take-home pay. The kids should be done with after-school care in a year or two, and I am getting settled into a career (finally) and should realistically see some earning power.
I don't like vacations and fancy things. I do spend a bit much on lunches. I like Subway for lunch. I can fix that.
It should still be feasible to sock away a fair bit of money. But what do I do with it? I literally have no clue. My mind has been wrapped up in how to actually make some money for a change, up until now.
