I am a relatively inexperienced investor in my early thirties. Married, no children or plans for, currently saving for a down payment on a house in the Portland, OR metro area. Combined income is $105,000. Obviously life is funny sometimes and doesn’t go according to plan, but with that being said my career looks bright with promotions likely and my annual income is expected to increase as I progress.

I currently have $70,000 between a Vanguard 401k and a Roth IRA. I am saving 15% of my personal income ($73,000) into the 401k and receive a 5% company match. My wife is going to do the same starting later this year and will receive a company match, and she makes $35,000 annually but right now she has not done that because I am waiting for the company match to begin at her one year mark with her employer. My 401k is solely in a target date retirement fund (Blackrock). The more I learn, slowly but surely, the more I feel like I can end up with more money if I take control of that a bit more now rather than taking the easier route and leaving it all in the target date fund. With that being said, that’s kind of scary. I’ve read countless articles, Reddit posts, comments and anything else I could get my hands on and I think I have a good idea of what I’d like to do but I would absolutely love some advice from people on here as many know much, much more than I.

As for options on what I am able to move my money within the Vanguard 401k to, here are the other funds:

American Funds EuroPacific Growth Fund Class R-6

Blackrock MSCI ACWI ex-U.S. IMI Index Fund

Blackrock Russell 1000 Index

Blackrock Russell 2000 Index

Blackrock U.S. Debt Index

Blackrock Treasury Inflation protected Securities Fund

Dodge & Cox Stock Fund

Emerald Growth Fund Institutional Class

Fidelity Contrafund Commingled Pool Class 1

Goldman Sachs Stable Value Portfolio

PIMCO Bond Portfolio

RS Small Cap Value Portfolio

I don’t want to have too much risk, but I definitely want to be more aggressive as I know that I should (fingers crossed) have time on my side as I am still 30 or so years away from retirement. If anyone can offer their opinion, I would greatly appreciate some insight!
