Hey everybody,
Like the title says my boyfriend recently got scammed. For some background, my boyfriend has always been bad with money and when we lived together I handled all of our finances. Recently, he has moved to a new city for a job and I'm planning on moving in with him in a couple of weeks. We have been living separately for about three months now and during that time I have not been managing his money.
Now, for the scam. Around 3 weeks ago, he got a job off of a housesitting website to housesit for a woman. She asked for his routing and account number and told him this was for the direct deposit for the job. Many of his friends and I warned him that this was a scam, but he refused to believe it. Obviously, the job never happened and he basically forgot about it. Well a few days ago, he gets a $700 deposit into his account. He has been struggling for money so he was very excited but did not tell me about it. She asks him to buy three Amazon gift cards, which he does. This totals around $300 that he gave to the scammer. The rest of the money he spent on various things. The deposit he got obviously bounced, so now he has -$600 in his bank account.
He gets paid next Thursday and I've told him to cancel his direct deposit for that job, as he needs to pay rent and can't afford to pay his bank $600. What can we do now? He has spoken to his bank and gotten nowhere. Is it possible to close his account and open a new account at a new bank? Keep in mind, I'm very aware of how stupid this entire thing is and so is he. I need advice on what to do next.
Thanks!
