The gas stations close to my home charge $1 for using an air pump. I was about to purchase a portable tire inflator to not pay this fee, but with a quick Google search I discovered the site freeairpump. As the name suggests, this site lists places with free air. It may not be 100% accurate as it is updated by users, but it helped me find a station with free air near my location. Of course, if a free air pump isn't in your vicinity then it's probably worth investing in a portable air compressor.
