Wife getting promotion to COO of mid-cap firm. Should we hire someone to review the offer? If not, anything we should make sure is in there?

My wife is, likely, going to get an offer to be COO of her company. Do executives at this level negotiate their offers if it is a promotion? If so, is external help like a comp consultant or lawyer generally used?

I would think, for instance, at this level the axe is more quick to fall especially in a merger. I feel like she needs to negotiate golden parachutes, etc.

Thoughts?
