In the late February of this year (2019), I spent more time than I’d like to admit on searching for the “best” washer and dryer. This was the first time I was buying a set of washer/dryer, as I had always rented an apartment before. A few consensuses on Reddit emerged:

  1. Of the washer and dryer buying, washer is what matters. Dryers, in general, are mechanically simple and are similar to each other.

  2. Front-loading washers, while popular these days, are mechanically more complicated and have more problems than top-loaders. Also, front loaders can have mold/mildew.

  3. High-efficiency (HE) top-loaders don’t have an agitator. They don’t wash as well. And they don’t spin as fast, so subsequent drying times are longer.

  4. Latest bells and whistles (sensors, electricals, etc.) are more susceptible to give out.

The overall Reddit consensus before 2018 was Speed Queen. You’ll see that older posts are all about Speed Queen washers. They were the most mechanically sound machines, because they were mostly mechanical. But in 2018, Speed Queen switched to an electrical control board, and people were disappointed. Some people still swear by Speed Queen.

The latest consensus is Maytag MVWP575GW Commercial-Grade Residential Washer, and its companion dryer (electric or gas).

Here is my experience buying Maytag MVWP575GW and MEDP575GW electric dryer.

  1. Samsung and LG washer/dryer units are not more expensive because they are better. They are more expensive because there is a 20% tariff on imported washers.

  2. Whether you buy your washer and dryer from Home Depot, Lowe’s, or local store, none of them has local stocks. They all get shipped after you buy them and are distributed by a distributor assigned in your area. Therefore, you save on sales taxes, if you order from an online vendor. I used ABT appliances, as recommended by a colleague to be reputable. They price-match anyone. I found goedekers had the lowest price (it says “sale ends today” every day).

  3. The shipping company emailed me to schedule a delivery, and they dropped off unboxed units in my laundry room. I installed them in a few minutes. The washer came with hoses. I ordered dryer installation kit on Amazon (check your power outlet, 3-pronged or 4-pronged power cord and vent thingy).

I’ve used the washer and dryer for a week now. They are great so far. Be sure to level your washer and dryer.
