I am kinda new to this subreddit, but I did a quick search and didn't see much about this subject.
It's a great way to save money and I have a few tips from my experience working in the children's department at Dillard's. I do want to add, do not be embarrassed about this! All of my coworker's regularly bought things for ourselves in the kid's department and enjoyed the adult's that came through.
tl;dr kid's section cheap. Women's shoe size - 2 = youth shoe size. Kid's clothes too, especially boy's.
To start, I think the most underrated is the shoes department. You don't have to be super small to shop here, most "big girl" shoes go up to youth 6 which is a women's size 8. "Big boy" sizes often go up to a youth 7 and even a few 8's, which is a size 9 or 10 in women's. Basically you take 2 away from whatever your women's size is and that's your youth size. For example I am a woman's size 6 so I buy youth size 4 (depending on brand and shoe type).
My best finds have been Nike, Converse, Sperry's, Toms, Hunter, and UGG for fractions of the cost. (few notes, Nike and UGG run small, Converse run big, and Sperry's run wide so should size down if you have narrow feet).
Also, don't be afraid to look at the boy's shoes, most of the sneakers are identical to girls in make just without obnoxious kiddie colors or design. Plus, men's wear shoes such as brogues and loafers are super on trend, can try the style for a fraction of the cost! I did and have a great pair of boys "driving loafers" on sale for $13.
A caveat to this, I'd recommend staying away from any youth "heels." though, I often found they were awkward looking in the larger sizes. If you like them, though, you do you boo!
This is getting long, so last few things I've picked up for kid's clothing.
If you're lucky to be small/petite to fit the stuff well, do it! Enjoy that thriftiness!
I, a not small person, still found ways to make it work. For reference, I am 5'5" with long legs, short torso, broad shoulders. I wear a size 6 or M, 34DD, weigh about 130lb (just to be safe, I know I'm not big, my broad shoulders, wide hips, and breasts just make most kids clothes impossible for me).
The things I found work best are basics, and again check out the boy's section. I'd normally have to buy size large or extra large. It's a great source for tanks, t shirts, pajamas, and even some pants. I found girl's t shirts make wonderful crop tops, even the t shirt dresses are great tunics with leggings. Boys undershirts are so cheap to buy in bulk! Also, socks! All the cheap, cute socks.
My absolute favorite kid's clothing finds were in the boy's slack's section during spring. Again, men's wear is so on trend and I found Polo and Calvin Klein trousers for $15! These super cute white trousers with blue pinstripes. If it helps anyone, big boys size 18 fit me best, but if I had shorter legs I could've done the 16.
I don't have a good way to wrap this up, friends, have fun shopping!
