Basically, a big part of financial independence is being independent from work. Sure, if you save $1M, your SWR gets you $40k/yr., but if you have $45k in expenses, you're still tied to work. If there's a huge recession, even if it will (as always) recover and then some, if it's timed poorly, it can cripple your early retirement.
BUT, if you lower your expenses as much as possible, you're less tied to work. Even if you can withdraw less, it will still be okay, as you won't need to work as much to cover your bills (if at all). So that's my justification for posting it here.
Anyways, what are some things you can do or skills you can learn to permanently lower monthly expenses?
I know a big one is car repair. Saves a ton. Some say garden, but with what I eat, I don't think it'd make a dent. Solar or wind power, perhaps? Those sky lights that refract sunlight for natural lighting during the day? Fireplace for heat? Not sure if there are others.
Build up rather than out to save on land and to heat the upper floors more efficiently?
How do you save on meat? Specifically, protein.
I'd love to get all my expenses to be <$750/mo. Anything you buy to save money?
