Hi PF! I was hoping some of you could help me figure out whether I should take a new job offer. I've been working at my current company for 6 years - it was my first job out of college. An old coworker reached out to me for a position at a start up company working in IT. It is a job I feel I am unqualified for but he seems to have a lot of faith in my abilities and many of my skills are transferable. The starting salary is almost 20% higher than what I make now but there are some trade-offs I'd be making if I make the jump. I'm very torn because I'm not sure I could get this kind of salary hike at another firm and if I were to stay at my company now it would probably take several years to get to the salary I'm being offered at the new place if I stayed. Is the higher salary worth is for less benefits/security?
Me:
- 28 years old.
- Bachelor's degree in Economics.
- Fully funded 6 month emergency fund (thanks to this sub!).
- Only debt is $4800 left on car (0% interest so I am not paying off early).
- No kids, not married.
- Rent an apartment
- ~$3k in monthly expenses
- $38k in my 401k and $8.5k in my Roth IRA
Current job:
- More secure job at a medium sized company.
- $67,500 w/ possible $5,000 bonus.
- 25 days PTO.
- 401K w/ 6% matching.
- Ability to work from home once a week.
- I don't like the job and I feel that I am stagnating where I am and have little chance of moving within the company, as I am the only SME in my department at the company, as everyone else has left. I have been applying other places, but none of them offer the salary hike I'd be getting at the new job.
New job:
- Start up company, so less secure.
- Salary of $80,000.
- 10 days PTO.
- No 401k but they are working on it (I'm inclined to believe them, as the person who got me the job is a former coworker that I trust and they recently rolled out health insurance and are now working on 401k).
- No health insurance until 90 days but the hiring manager (who's my former coworker) said he's going to see if he can get me earlier coverage.
- Free lunch every day.
- Will be expanding my skill set and working in a different industry.
I would really appreciate any guidance you can give me.
