My new one-bedroom apartment is an older unit. It has electric heat, but the furnace looks ancient.

This is also the time of the year to buy marked-down space heaters. A particular retail chain has all theirs marked down to half off and a decent supply of name-brand units in stock; I'm thinking about picking one up and throwing it in the closet until next winter comes along.

Would I possibly save money on heating by picking up a space heater instead of relying on the furnace while I'm home? Or is a kilowatt a kilowatt when it comes to heating?
