I just finished up my taxes and ended up owing a little over $2000 this year. Usually it’s been +/- $500 owed or returned, which is right in the sweet spot for me.

I noticed my wife’s bonus this year was paid by a 1099-MISC, with no taxes prepaid by her employer. She’s a full-time W2 with them, and everything except the bonus was on the W2.

Are they doing this to skirt paying their half of the taxes owed on that amount? Isn’t that effectively sticking us with 100% of those taxes? I’m not the best at understanding taxes, but my understanding was the employer paid 50% and employee paid 50% on Medicare, SS, etc.

Thanks for any insight!
