The day after valentines day, many years ago, my wife and I went grocery shopping. We noticed all of the valentines day candy on sale for about 80% off. She really enjoyed snapping up a few boxes of chocolate that day. From there, I encouraged clearance day scouring after all major holidays. At first the frugality of the situation was very practical. But it eventually morphed into something else entirely. The anticipation of getting 80% off treats become a time to be mindful of our consumer behaviors in light of how they affect our future. It became something to bond over. It's so fun to joke about now, how valentines day will be a barren event in the household but the day after, when the dust settles, when others in the rat race are paying debtors, we are simply relaxing on a pile of treats in our own world.
