When I was a practicing financial advisor, one of my wholesalers (can't recall the particular company) provided me with a really great chart. It contained about 100 years of US stock market performance and economic activity including Large Caps, Small Caps, Inflation, periods of recession, President, which party controlled congress, whether or not we were in a war. It really demonstrated the power of long term investing and how many crises we as a country have faced. I've been trying to find it online, but I've had no such luck. Can anyone help me out?
