The IRS provides an ugly but usable system at freefilefillableforms.com to e-file your taxes without a fee. No income limit. It's a little clunky, but for most of us with relatively straightforward taxes it's easy enough. Just follow the standard IRS guidelines for the new 1040 form (which are also straightforward) and you don't have to pay the extra "tax prep tax" of $50 or whatever.

The fun part is that you use TurboTax online, enter your data, and double-check to confirm that your refund/payment is correct. That provides a good gut-check that you did your math right and if you caught all the proper filing tricks. TurboTax doesn't charge you until you file, but it does display your current refund/amount due totals. So just don't file.

You can benefit from their system without having to cough up any money to them, which is great, because I hate, hate, hate paying Intuit or other companies for tax prep.
