One of the most underrated aspects of BIFL is modifying the things you own. Whether that’s upgrading parts, repainting or refinishing, or replacing broken parts with more durable alternatives. I want to hear about your most effective BIFL mods.
One of my favorite mods is replacing the pleather ear covers on my Koss headphones with cotton velour covers. The velour material is easier to wash and much more comfortable, especially if you wear headphones over your glasses. The velour covers aren’t official, I just measured the diameter of the headphones and ordered some covers with similar measurements.
I also have a kitchen table that I refinished. When I bought it from a thrift store it had a foggy, sticky, plasticky polyurethane finish. I sanded down the top and refinished it with boiled linseed oil. It feels much nicer, and should last for decades with regular maintenance. I was too lazy to sand all the legs, so I just painted them.
