So my car recently is having a lot of trouble, and rather than spending the money fixing it, I decided there's nothing wrong with just walking to campus - saves me money, gets me some exercise, etc.
I'm in a pretty small Midwestern town, so we don't really have a great bus system or Uber/Lyft.
I also live in an apartment complex with mostly families and elderly people, and haven't found any other students nearby to hitch rides from.
I only JUST started walking. I loved it actually! It's a 45 minute walk, and I wasn't nearly as cold as I thought I'd be. I was actually kind of hot.
However, my state was just given a winter advisory warning and there is a LOT of talk for the next few days about sleet, freezing rain, ice, and snow.
I have no issues walking in the snow, but the path I take is already pretty covered in ice. I haven't had to walk it in actively poor weather, and it seems like I won't have a choice tonight or I'd be stranded on campus.
I can't take a bus, as they stop going at 6PM and I'm on campus later than that. I could potentially get a ride just for tonight, but the ice is the rest of the week. And my car isn't currently safe to drive even for a few days and I can't afford the repairs.
Any advice for getting through ice and sleet? I'm considering buying some of those clip on cleats soon, but those won't help in the immediate few days. I know the proper way to walk over ice, but with my walk home being entirely downhill and iced over I just keep picturing me falling into traffic or something as equally unpleasant.
Thanks!
Edit: Just wanted to update everyone that I did indeed make it home with just my normal snow boots and it actually wasn't bad at all. The ice that was already there wasn't much icier. It was still just ice. I actually felt safer on the sidewalk than the few times I walked in the street. The street felt way icier. It was a lot slower than my earlier 45 minute walk, but I don't mind sacrificing a bit of time I'd spend goofing off on a nice productive walk instead. I also think I'll sleep way better tonight.
Honestly, the worst part of the whole icy walk was how sore my thighs are. I didn't realize I was so out of shape. xD
I have some clip on cleats in the mail though! Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions and brand recommendations!
