I have been asking for my w-2 for these past few weeks and my boss kept giving me the run around. I finally received it today and when I go to pick it up he tells me that it's a 1099 and that I'm an independent contractor. He hands me a check for all the taxes that he took out of my paychecks in 2018 and says that due to some type of error it's easier if I just file as 1099. I'm not an idiot and know this is wrong.

I've always suspected something was up when they weren't giving me paystubs. After I constantly asked for them, he gave them to me a few weeks later. I noticed that the tax deductions were completely wrong and just random numbers. For example the fica and medicare deductions added up to like 2%, when they are supposed to be 7.65%. The total deductions from every paycheck was around 13-14%. I have only been working for the company for for 5 months so far.

I know that I'm an employee. I have a set schedule, use company equipment, etc. This is bs. I'm going to quit as soon as I find a new job. How can I resolve this issue with my employer quietly? Also does making me a 1099 mean I have to pay more in taxes than if I were a w2?
