Have an 04 Volvo S60 with 124k miles that needs about 4k of very deferred mtce. Have basically done nothing but a few oil changes for the past 6-8 years. Now needs about 4k in repairs, none of them cosmetic. Here is the logic check - I can sell my current car for slightly more than I owe and dump a $490/mo. payment, I owe about 15k on it. If I do this and drive the Volvo for just 9 months more, I've saved about the cost of the repairs. Anything more and I'm net positive. I'd like to get another 2-3 years minimum out of the Volvo which does not seem unrealistic. Make sense? WWYD? Assume no immediate financial pressures other than the anxiety of not saving as much as I want to.
