20 lb propane exchanges at your local gas station are a rip off. Though convenient, you can save big over time by getting them filled at your local hardware store or other filling location. However, some fillers still charge a flat fee for 20lb tanks (usually 15$). A 20 lb tank can hold 5 gallons of propane, however they are usually never filled past 4.1-4.4 gallons. So if propane is 3$ish a gallon you are still being up sold as you could've had the tank filled for 12-14$ depending on the flat fee.
Also consider the fact that propane exchanges at gas stations have a high likelihood of giving you a filled tank that is already past the test date. This will sometimes cause a hardware store or other outlet not to fill the tank. Leaving you with only one option... exchange it and continue the exchange cycle.
A brand new empty 30lb tank can be had for under 50$. This will allow you 12 years of free and clear refilling wherever you chose (ace, tractor supply,etc..) on a price per gallon basis.
Propane prices and how it is sold vary across the nation so keep that in mind with this post.
