I have been pursuing an electrical engineering degree at a university for several years. Throughout that time, I have faced many struggles and obstacles that have hindered my progress. I have finally made a breakthrough and am more confident than ever in completing my degree and beginning the next chapter of my life. That is, until I recently learned that I will no longer be able to fund the remaining two semesters of my education.

Due to my past grades, I am currently on academic probation which bars me from receiving financial aid. Thus, the only remaining options were private student loans. Due to having an insufficient personal income, all loans require a credit worthy cosigner. Unfortunately, my parents credit has too much revolving debt from other unrelated expenditures.

I looked into my university’s payment plans and the most accommodating plan would require me to pay $4,100 a month for three months starting this week. I am currently employed as a bus driver for the city and I make $14.85 an hour. My rent and utilities come out to about $800 a month. In order to pay nearly $5,000 a month before groceries I would need to work over 350 hours a month which is clearly impossible to do while taking a rigorous course load of engineering classes.

This has left me hopeless and worried for my future. It seems my only option is to abandon my dream of being an electrical engineer and drop out. Does anyone have any advice? I’m interested if I have any remaining options. I don’t think I would ever be able to climb out of debt without a degree. Thank you for reading.
