I've been lurking for a while on /r/simpleliving and have learned a lot from reading here. My spouse and I were bit by the simple-living bug about a year ago, and we threw away and donated many things that we had owned. So much so that we realized we did not need such a large apartment anymore, and figured in addition to living more simply we could also save money and force ourselves to get rid of a little more by downsizing when our lease was up. We stayed in the same area of town but moved to a much smaller, cozier place with our two little kids (it's about 1/3 smaller and with only 1 bathroom). Whenever we have mentioned the short move to friends or family (at least about a dozen times now), people have tended to ask if it was for a bigger place, and when we say we actually got one much smaller, we are always met with a surprised look and more questions. But people who visit like it more than the old one, and we think it's because it is more open with lots of windows and there is no clutter, which makes it seem bigger than it really is. It has made us both noticeably happier, and it has been eye-opening seeing and hearing people's response to a couple in their 20's willingly downsizing. Just thought I'd share our experience!
