Just found this out so please correct me if I am interpreting this program incorrectly.
So if your library doesn't have a book you want, there is a program called Zip Books. Basically, you ask for a book request, they buy it off of Amazon, goes to your home, and then when you are finished reading it you return it to your library and they will add it to the library! I believe this is only for participating California libraries unfortunately. I found this out by my library's weekly emails.
I think this a great idea, never knew how to request certain book and this can be a way that libraries stay up to date on more recent books.
