I’m using a throwaway account because this is embarrassing and I can’t believe it happened but I really need some help. Sorry this might be a long story but I’m really stressed out and I need some help.
So basically this is happening right now. I have been looking for freelance work for a little bit and I finally got a response. The person told me to message the hiring manager on google hangout. I messaged him, I introduce myself, he tells me a little about himself, then he tells me about my position and what I’m going to be doing and information about job basically, then proceeds to ask me “interview” question and tells me that I have passed. He tells me that I’m going to need equipment such as a laptop and a time tracker, which they would funded for me via check.
It seems pretty legit so far. I thought that’s how it was like working from home. This is where shit starts going down hill. There where a lot of red flags, where any logical person would have said that’s it. Me being the desperate broke college kid I am, I trusted them because Rent and bills need to be paid(i live with my gf who is currently looking for a new job) . So they email me the first check for $2000 so I can fund the vendor, demanding that I use my chase account even though I haven’t touch that account in about a few months. I mobile deposit it and called customer service the next day to confirm it went through and they said it did and my funds were in the account. I then go to the bank, withdraw all the money and proceed to buy iTunes cards( which I questioned because it was odd but the hiring manager said it makes it easier for the vendor to buy software).
The next day he tells me the vendor need another $2000 we go through the same process again. This time the next day I call the bank and they tell me my account got restricted but the person on the phone didn’t even know why. I tell them that it’s fine considering I don’t really bank with them anymore, due to the fact that there really isn’t any chase where I live. But anyways the day after I get an email saying My account is short $2000. So I immediately call chase and they tell me that the reason they closed my account were because those 2 checks were I guess not legit so the second check never processed but the first one did and since I used the funds already I don’t really think I can do anything. I messaged the hiring manager tell him my problem and I was short money on my bank account. He then tells me he’s going to talk to the accounting department and assures me everything’s going to be fine. He then blocks me on hangout because all my messages failed to send and he isn’t responding to my emails.
I just want to know if there is anything I can do for them to remove what I owe or at least not charge me any extra fees till I pay this off. Also want to know if there’s a way that I can get whoever scammed me caught. At the moment I am literally broke with only a few dollars till I get paid in 2 weeks so I am really basically fucked for the next few months. I learned my lesson and I’ll probably be suffering for the next few months. I just want to know if there’s a way for me to fix it or at least make it a little easier for me to pay them back.
