So I just did an initial calculation of what I can expect this year (via FreeTaxUSA) and I'm at a bit of a loss (literally).

A bit about my situation for 2018...

  • part-time resident across NJ / NY

  • NYC residence as of October '18

  • employed in NYC

  • W-4's filled out for Federal (0), NY (0), and NJ (0) - with the NJ W-4 dropping off once I changed my home address to NYC in my company's payroll system. To put bluntly, I should have been giving more than enough to cover my tax burden.

  • according to FreeTaxUSA I get a decent return Federally, smaller one for NYC and owe $1,700+ in NJ - how can that be right?

Am I missing something here? I feel like I've entered something wrong, but I've gone through and everything seems correct. I'm planning on doing a couple more calculations with other filing softwares.

I've also reached out to my company's payroll to ensure all the info on my W-2 is correct. Ever since we got acquired in 2017 our parent company's W-2s have looked weirder / more cumbersome than our previous ones. For example...

  • new W-2s have had separate boxes for NY & NJ (& Federal) - whereas the old ones just had ones for Federal & NY

  • these different NJ / NY boxes have also had slightly different data between them, like no state taxes shown taken in Boxes 17 & 19 for NJ, & income / wages being slightly different.

  • this mismatch in data also lead my tax filer last year to overstate my NJ income by DOUBLE forcing me to file an amended return because I "owed" $1,300+ - I'm thinking this might also be happening here again this year and why it says I owe close to just as much as I initially did last year. Perhaps FreeTaxUSA is taking the wonky W-2 info as laid out at face value when in fact it needs to actually be entered in differently...idk.

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas I'm all ears as I'm not really sure where I should be looking for a solution.

Thanks in advance.
