SPOILERS

Netflix has a documentary, The Staircase, about a 2001 murder case in Raleigh, North Carolina. The series initially aired years ago, and they made a few new episodes and released it on Netflix. This post isn't about the true crime part, BUT

SPOILER They don't cover it much on Netflix, but they address it more on the BBC's Podcast, "Beyond Reasonable Doubt," that Michael Peterson had a financial motive.

Here's what they cover in the podcast:

  • He's a writer: novelist/ columnist

  • She's a brilliant engineer who apparently worked pretty high up in her very large company

  • He has two sons with horrific debt, one paying $750 a month just in interest and the other paying $250 a month in interest

  • He and his wife had over $100,000 in credit card debt (I think this is what they said!!)

Even just listening to these numbers caused me so much stress. I honestly don't understand how people can let the lifestyle creep get this bad...
