Hey all,

I can’t get approved for a credit card, and I’m not sure what to do.

I currently have a card that I co-signed with my mom, but she’s been a bit too involved in that and I’d like to get away from her involvement in my finances ASAP.

I’m a 21 year old college student who will be moving cross country in the next six months so the thought of having any money tied up in a secured card is a bit scary for me.

I have a debit card that works fine for my day to day needs. It’s become frustrating when I need to spend larger amounts of money, however, because it takes 3 days to transfer money from my savings to my checking and I have to preapprove any payments over $500 with my bank.

I’ve had a few utilities in my name in college and I have a pretty decent credit score. The problem seems to be that I pay too much in rent when compared to how much I make. All of the credit card companies require that I make at least $450 more than I’m spending on rent.

My three main reasons for wanting a credit card are to build credit, become more financially independent, and to reduce the anxiety related to my debit card and the restrictions on that account.

Any thoughts would be great.
