I apologize in advance for my ignorance!
So I have a citi credit card. I have two bank accounts I pay from (also have savings account and retirement, but they’re not relevant here) Account A used to be primary, now I use Account B. Both accounts are checking.
I deauthorized Account A. Citi was great for the past year, and only withdrew from Account B as I told them to. But then, this month, they randomly tried to withdraw from Account A. Account B has sufficient funds.
Account A, however, doesn’t. So each time they do this, they incur me a $35 overdraft fee. I called Citi, they said it was a computer error, apologized, and stopped the transaction. All set, right? Nope!
My account is restored to normal. Then, to my surprise, they “retried”. Back in the red, another $35 fee. I called them, they said “whoops”, same song and dance. I also called the other bank, who said they couldn’t do anything (don’t think that’s true based on what I’m seeing online).
Citi also says they cannot have me manually pay the amount because it’s already been posted to them. Odd.
For reasons that are unclear to me, attempts to move money from Account B to Account A aren’t working. Gotta call that bank. At this point I’m just gobsmacked by all the incompetence and wonder what I’m doing wrong as it seems unlikely that all the banks are this bad.
So I thought maybe it’s sorted out, as the money was again returned. But nope! This morning they tried again! Another $35 fee!
From what I see, they can’t retry again after this attempt. But I’m now out $115 over transactions I didn’t consent to.
Is it true they can’t try again after this? Once this one fails, can I manually pay from Account B?
If they can retry, how do I stop them?
I also turned off autopay. Don’t want to run into this headache again.
Again I’m sorry for what may be asinine questions! Just trying to understand how to handle this.
