taking general ed classes at community college -- thanks to grants, I haven't had to pay any out of pocket. I don't plan on registering for classes in January, will start up again In may.
I make $10.25/hour and bring home around $325/week (includes weekly tips). my family is in no shape to help me financially so I have supported myself for the past year since I moved out on my own. it would be nice to have help but I understand the difficult position they are in and I am actually very proud of myself for figuring it all out on my own.
I have $0 in savings and pretty much live paycheck to paycheck
I drive a beater car - 2001 gold Honda w almost 300k miles.. its not the nicest car but im relieved to not have a car note and cheap insurance.
debt-I had $200 on a tjmaxx credit card I got in August and I paid it off last week. now, I only owe $358.57 on a discover credit card that starts building interest 1/2/2019 (next week). since this debt is so small and it is about to start building interest, btw, credit cards were both cut and trashed awhile ago.
expenses/month:
- rent (includes everything but power) - $487
- power- usually no more than $40
- car insurance- $90
- phone- $31
- discover card minimum payment- $35
- gas- $60-70
- food- $200-250 (I need to work on this, I know that's more than I should be spending)
- health insurance- $32 (doesn't start until January)
these are my only expenses but i end up spending mindlessly on food and other random things I feel like I 'need' in the moment. for example, I dropped $85 yesterday for new bedding & random bedroom stuff :/
I really want to get my financial life together. I want to build up a nest egg.. I don't want to struggle living paycheck to paycheck my whole life like my family. Im just looking for some guidance. I know the younger I start, the better off I will be.. any advice you could give would much appreciated!
Im new to posting on reddit so sorry for any mistakes and thanks for the help fellow baby steppers (:
