So this might sound like shilling or something but I'm super pumped right now and none of my friends are BIFL enthusiasts so here I am.
So about 6 years ago I obtained a Kershaw Tremor and it has served me almost daily ever since, with very minimal upkeep other than sharpening it maybe once or twice a year. Or so I thought. Turns out I should've taken it apart and clean/lubricated everything on occasion (which seems stupidly obvious in hindsight, but I guess I thought taking it apart would void the warranty or something). So sure enough, the torsion bar (key component in their assisted opening) eventually snapped due to the increased stress from not being lubricated, and even though the knife was still usable, it was a little dangerous since the resistance provided by the bar acted as a lock. Not only that, but opening it just didn't feel the same. All in all, it kind of killed me since this knife has sentimental value to me now.
So naturally I do some research to try and get a replacement and fix it, but it turns out that not only is the knife vastly discontinued, but it was one of their models made in China, which according to my research and their disclaimers, is a double whammy for them not having a replacement part.
Well shit.
Discouraged but not hopeless, I decided that with no metalworking experience I was going to figure out how to make a replacement, but I needed some material to play around with, so I decided to contact Kershaw support to see if they would tell me what the bars were made of. While I was at it, I figured I'd ask for a replacement bar *just* in case, but I had very little hope. According to them, their warranty team won't contact you unless there is a problem with your request. All shipments should take 5-10 business days.
A week goes by, no response. Hopes are high
Two weeks, no response. Hopes are now slim.
Three weeks, no response. Already given up hope on replacement, and was just starting to research materials on how to make one.
BUT WAIT! To my absolutely wonderful surprise, I opened my mail today and THERE'S A PACKAGE FROM KERSHAW!! I guess tracking down the part from China or at least shipping it from there increased the shipping time.
So I open it up, not just one, but TWO torsion bar replacements! Open my knife, pop a new one in, and bam, she's as good as new!!!
The moral of the story is: Even though my model isn't available anymore, please buy from Kershaw. If it wasn't for my stupidity, I'm sure this knife would've lasted for life. Not only that, but even though they specifically state that they don't guarantee replacement parts for discontinued models and the Chinese models, they still put the effort in to make me happy as a pup in a ball factory. Only complaint is that I wish they would've given me a heads up that it would've taken longer, but I'm too happy to care right now.
TL;DR Kershaw is the tits.
