So I’m 23 and a bartender in NYC. I have no debt, excellent credit, and 50K in savings that I’ve worked very hard to build for 2 years.

Currently I’m intending to travel. At the beginning of 2019 I’m buying a one way ticket to Auckland (using miles, I have 82000 American Airline/One World miles) and backpack my way across the world for at least two years. I’m a pro at living below my means so I know I can make this work.

My running joke has been that the only way I’m coming back to America is if someone pays for my flight because I don’t intend to stop traveling until I have no money.

On the road I do plan to work where I can. I’ll be staying in hostels, couchsurfing, working for board etc. I’d like to spend $50 a day max so I’m not worried about running out of money quickly.

My main concern is if I should be allocating some of these funds elsewhere. It feels pretty irresponsible to actually spend my last penny on these travels, and I know I’ll have a hard time letting myself go below 10K in my savings. Are there good options or guidelines for what to do with it before I go? I’d like to make my money work for me, but I also don’t want to throw a bunch into investing and not have it available to me to make this trip amazing.
