To preface this, I would say I have a mild addiction to my smartphone. I can live without it, but I use it to fill the gaps of downtime throughout the day—especially at night.
I didn’t have work today, was having trouble sleeping last night, so I spent a few hours reading random articles and news blogs. By the time 2 am rolled around, my mind was absolutely bogged down with information. My head was spinning, and I started developing a headache.
In order to get to bed, I had to imagine a dump truck cleaning out all of the “garbage” thoughts that were in my head. It took about two hours before my brain was calm enough to get some sleep, and I’m feeling much better today.
What I’m realizing from this is how damaging excess information is. It can totally backup your thought processes and make your brain feel “dirty.” Last night I wanted to literally pull my brain out of my head and scrub it down with soap.
Although this information overload has never had such a negative effect on me as it did last night, it has made me much more aware of the information I consume. I think it is crucial for one’s mental health to be very cautious in regards to what media they are consuming, and to what degree.
