So, hey, this is my first post đź‘‹

I’ve been having doubts about my workplace for a while and I think that i need an opinion outside of my circle of friends and family.

English is not my first language, excuse me for any mistakes i make.

A little about my background. I am in my early 20s and i’ve been working in the advertisement industry for about 5 years. I am at my current position for about a year.

I left my last job for a better opportunity and in the meantime have some time to finish my BA.

The problem is that I was very clear on the interview that one of my biggest concerns is the overtime I do. At my last job the last 2 months I did 12 hours a day. Usually the workday is 8 hours long, they don’t pay overtime anywhere in the advertisement industry here.

So when i started here, it was fairly busy, I still did around 9-12 hours a day but for the first few months it was kind of okay because I really wanted to shine. They also told me that usually it’s not that busy.

It was a lie, obviously, because every other month they tell us that “we need to work hard because it’ll be worth it”. I did a month and a half where I had 16 hours long workdays, working around 6 hours on the weekends as well, because the workload is unbelievably huge (there are a lot of reasons for that, bad project/time management, no idea how much time the tasks we have take etc.)

I had an evaluation recently and it was pretty good. When I questioned the workhours i was told that our job is not 9 to 5, that i need to be more proactive. That at all times I need to think about the projects we’re working on, when I’m home and my Bf is watching a movie i should do research. That the good work we’re doing should bring me satisfaction in itself etc.

So it took me some time to see that it’s a huge exploitation scheme, I used to say to myself that “it’s one of the best agencies”, “I’ll make a great portfolio” or “it’ll pay off”. To be honest I don’t believe in any of this at this point.

Should I continue fighting for more normal hours, or is the situation just not worth it?

I may have some doubts about where would I continue and so on, but I think the situation at times is brutal.
