What really got me thinking about this is I just used the taxcaster thing to estimate my refund as if our checks this month were the last ones of the year. If both my wife in I put our details in there, but click married and filing separately, then we both get money back. If we change it to jointly and nothing else changes, we owe like $3,000.

I always hear the tax benefits to marriage, but so far it looks like filing "married but separate" gives us the most refund. What am I missing?

Also, if it matters, we both currently claim 0 on our w4 and "withholding at the higher single rate". We were told that more taxes would be taken out this way instead of just claiming 0 and married.

Edit: I also read that her student loan payments will go up if we file jointly?
