Future MIL is getting a down payment for a house ~$250k, from her company since it's moving across the country. MIL and fiancee work for same company, but MIL isn't moving and will travel, but we are. She plans on buying a house, or at least putting up the down payment for us. The catch is, the house/ mortgage would be in her name and we'd be paying rent to her. My biggest concern is that we'd be paying more to rent from her than if we got an apartment with a shorter commute, while also not getting any of the financial benefits of owning a house. Fiancee is pissed at me because I feel like this is a really bad move for us.

Am I right to be concerned or am I overreacting?

Edit: 250k would be the price if the house, not the down payment
