I thought I’d ask for some advice on this:
As it’s fall and we live in Michigan, we’ve already been relying on the heat. My husband and I just moved into our apartment in late August (first time renters)
We’ve needed the heater for a few weeks already now, and at first it seemed fine (aside from always heating to a degree more than you ask it to, but whatever). However, this past week-ish, I’ve noticed that no matter what I set it to, it has been setting itself back to 70 at random...not a terrible temperature, but I would like the temperature I ask for...
And then since last night, the display has been going blank and thermostat turning itself off—also at random.
The temperature can be fixed by setting it again back to what I asked, and the display has come back on when I’ve turned it off then back on, but..I can’t do this when we are asleep or when we aren’t home.
Should I be able to ask my landlord to replace it, or will I be expected to deal with it because it sort of works?
I would like to keep a nice relationship with our landlord and avoid appearing difficult, but this is only the beginning of the cold weather season and I’m a little worried about having to try to put up with it all winter, or having it quit on us altogether at some point when it’s freezing out.
I really appreciate any input on this!
tl;dr: Can I ask my landlord to replace our thermostat although it sort of still works, but unpredictably?
