Constantly worried about family finances (retirement and otherwise) and it’s causing a strain on my marriage.
Wife and I are in our early 30s with no kids.
-
$125,000 combined salary (I recently started a small business and my wife gets benefits through her office job)
-
$2,000/month in mortgage, car insurance, utilities, HOA
-
$1,500/month in various other expenses (a lot are deductible for business)
-
Own both our cars outright
-
$0 CC debt
-
$125,000 equity in our house
-
$27,000 in checking account
-
Between IRAs, 401(k), and my SEP, we have $50,000 for retirement and max out all of these each year.
Are my fears unfounded? I lose sleep worrying that we’re not saving enough short term or long term. It’s almost become a point of tension in my marriage. But because I handle the finances, I m afraid that I’m making some critical errors. And I don’t know what to do with our checking account. I’m always worried we’ll need a huge emergency fund so I don’t even think what we have is enough.
