I had a bunch of bags of loose change (copper, small denomination silver) just sitting doing nothing.
Banks / cashiers don't want it (requires me to count, a teller to look annoyed that they need to count) and coinstar machines obviously take a tax.
I've found that the coin hoppers on the automated checkouts are very good and take a lot of change. Being automated, means nobody except the machine needs to count it!
(Don't do this at a busy time for the shop. Avoid being the guy at peak time feeding the machines with pennies).
You can always finish the cost of your shop with another payment method too. So even when you're collecting loose change during the week, put it in an automated machine when you next visit the shop.
