My husband gets $3,261 a month in VA disability compensation, this money is nontaxable. He'll probably get this for the rest of his life due to his conditions never getting better. We were talking about putting away some each month, say $500 or so. We just don't know how to go about it. We can't do a Roth IRA because his income doesn't count. Would an Ally savings account work? Any other options? I don't work due to my own health, but hopefully I can go back to my old company once I sort my health out. We're both 30 and are just wondering about our financial future.

Here's our monthly budget

  • Mortgage - $780 (this may be lowered due to my husband being able to get a property tax exemption in January)
  • Car insurance - $154
  • Food - $200
  • Gas - $40
  • YouTube TV - $40
  • Child support - $225
  • Utility Bills - $150

This leaves us with around $1,672 at the end of the month. We don't have any debt to speak of. We also have $10k in the bank.

Thank you!
