So I have a very large dog who loves to shed no matter what I do (brush her almost every other day, not why I'm here though) and my mom absolutly hates it. And I hate vacuuming every single day because hardwood makes you see everything. So to shut her up I want to get a robot vacuum....but I have a few issues. The main thing, my mom has a few area rugs, one of them is very thick, and tall....I fear a roomba will get stuck on this, the room is also very large and somewhat complex...I'm sure the technology has come a far way, but will anything that's offered today have issues? And after the house is mapped out, would I be able to block off areas so the vacuum doesn't go anywhere I don't want it to?

My sister and I are currently looking at a roomba 980 since she can get it for $650 (after tax) at her job, would this be able to fit my needs? Or is there something better I should probably use? $1000 is probably my max budget. Also is it worth buying these things used to save a few bucks? and if so, is there anything I should keep in mind when I do this (such as replacing parts before using it)

I also saw a few posts recommending a Xiaomi Mi, but I fear it's so cheap because it data mining you....not really ok with that.

Here is what we're working with

Thick carpet

primary cleaning area (ignore the mess, child just went to bed and haven't picked up yet)
