I have a deck that is roughly 15 years old and, I have to admit, I haven't actually taken care of maintenance on it. Some of the railing is rotting and I need to replace them. The deck floor is ok though it could use a wash, staining, and screwing. Anyways, the posts are integrated into the deck as they extend two feet below the floor and rise up to 3 feet above the floor. Attached to the posts are the rim joists that define the outter boundary of the decks - so the posts are inside of the outter rim joists. As you would expect, these posts have warped out of alignment. Steaming the posts to realign them are out of the question. So what can be done?My last thought is that I can build a box out of treated 1x6 (not deck boards) to sleeve the deck posts and attach them to the posts. Where the deck posts are too far out of alignment, or wouldn't fit in the sleeves, I can cut those posts off at a point where they would fit and attach the sleeves accordingly. New railing would be attached to the sleeves. Since the decking floor is only 2.5 feet high, I don't have to worry about deathly falls and the strength needed in the posts to prevent fall throughs would be less than having true posts there. Is there any other ideas or anything I need to think about? Thanks! via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2wYCKcl
