I hope this is the place to put this.
PayPal called me telling me I had a negative balance of 1,596 dollars. Of course I immediately thought this was a scam and put on a stupid southern accent saying that my “ma should be coming up the hill with my credit card” and then just left the poor guy on hold for 30 minutes (I honestly thought wasting this scammer’s time was a pretty good use of my time). Then I have a horrifying revelation when I login to my paypal the following week and see that I do indeed have a negative account balance of $1,596. On August 15th, 4 payments of $399 were deposited by some dude named Joe. Then a series of a few dozen payments were withdrawn, in increments of around 40 dollars, in total equaling $1,596. Here’s where things get fuzzy for me. Then I think those payments were auto flagged as fraud, and then the original 4 payments of $399 were withdrawn into Compass Bank - which according to the nice lady I called at PayPal has been on my account since 2009. I am certain this is not the case. They said they’ll investigate and return my account balance. But all they did was send me an email saying the dozens of $40 transactions were indeed marked as fraudulent and that my new account balance should reflect that.
Which it absolutely doesn’t. Guess how much it still is? That’s right. -$1,596 and now I am pretty sure they think that I scammed them because they see me as having deposited money into compass bank (a bank I’ve never heard of) and then I guess disputed the transactions. How this leaves my account in the negative is beyond me, but I had assumed this kinda thing couldn’t happen with PayPal. Woops.
So, before I call them back (I am not accepting incoming calls from them so I can be sure it’s actually them), do I have options?. There is no way in hell I can afford to pay them 1600 bucks, and even if there was, there is no way in hell I would.
Anyone know what kind of recourse they have, and more importantly, what kind of recourse I have?
