WARNING very challenging and tedious project not for the weak or impatient.progress photosFirst I completely disassembled the laptop removing any electronics and getting it down to bare metal.Remove all plastics, stiffener in the LCD panel housing, keyboard, etc. you just want bare unibody, nothing extra as it can get damaged in the Lye bath we are setting up in the next step. Then I placed the metal in a lye bath. I took about a handful of lye tablets you can buy at your local hardware store and put that in a cat litter basin that probably holds about 5 -7 gallons of water. I put the water level just high enough to cover the metal. After about 20 minutes, I rinsed off the parts with clean water several times to get the lye off and you should start to see the anodized layer wipe off. Basically keep it in the bath until a good majority of it is removed. You don’t want to leave it in too long because the threads for screws on the unibody may get damaged, particularly around the keyboard. You may need some crazy glue to make sure the screws stay into place if that happens. After that, I used a power sander to get the last bit of anodized aluminum off starting with a 320 grit sand paper. I started a bit high so that it doesn’t leave deep scratches in the metal.Once you’ve gotten all the anodized aluminum off I hand sanded the rest stepping up from 320 -> 600 -> 800 -> 1000 -> 1500 -> 2000. After the sanding is done and uniform you need a cotton buffer wheel. You can get them at Home Depot and they can be attached to any drill.I used rubbing compound on the aluminum first with the buffing wheel. Wipe the metal surface off really well.Last and most rewarding step was applying mother’s aluminum polish. Rub it into the metal real good and you should start seeing it turn black on the cloth you’re using. Completely normal. You might see that with the rubbing compound step as well. After you apply the polish, wipe it off reallly well. AndYou’re done! Before and after. Started with the bottom. Remove the rubber feet and get to work!Same process again with the palm rest.Final product with the apple logo rainbow mod.For the rainbow Apple logo, you have to remove the logo off the aluminum which you should have done in the previous step. You will have to sand down the inner layer with 1000 grit sand paper and then 2000 to make it as clear as possible. You can also hit it with rubbing compound as well to make it as clear as possible.I then make a square with a rainbow pattern and had it printed on clear plastic sheets like the one they used to use for overhead projectors back in the day.Replace the Apple logo and tape the square rainbow pattern behind it and you will get that rainbow Apple look. Not sure if they still make these but I took measurements and made my own. Got them printed at Kinko's or you can print with a color laser printer.Lastly put the computer back together and turn it on.Enjoy.Refer to ifixit.com as it pertains to your specific machine on disassembly. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2Ngi4Hz
