Hey y'all, I made a little free library and want to bolt it to the tree in my parkway. It's a big 'ol some sort of pine tree. I'd say the trunk is over 2.5 ft in diameter. Here are my considerations:I've heard it's not good to bolt something tight against a tree (it needs to be able to grow outward), so I don't want to just lag screw it in.The tree trunk is pretty uneven, so I need to be able to somewhat easily get the library plumbI don't want it to be able to wiggle back and forth or anything.I had the idea to use hanger bolts (lag threads on one side, machine threads on the other) to lag into the tree and then bolt to the library, but I can't find any that have lag threads longer than 3 inches or so, and I'd like to lag in to at least 6 (the tree has thick bark, and is a softwood).I also thought about using 2 regular (SS) lag screws (one above the other, because of the trunk curvature) to attach a piece of flat material (plywood, a metal plate) to the tree. Not flat against the tree, but sort of suspended an inch or two out, at the heads of the lags. Then I'd use regular machine bolts to bolt that material to the library. This just seems pretty complicated, and I'm worried about the library being able to wiggle side-to-side on the heads of the lags.Anyone got any experience doing something like this, or similar? Or just any ideas? Thanks! via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2wGhqJ9
